K. Stellar Dutcher (they/them) sings, writes and leads songs of liberation, resistance, ancestry and joy. Queer songleader, ancestral protest folk artist and community organizer, Stellar believes deeply in the power of song to build community, foster resilience, and inspire change. They are the founder of transcendental folk project The Seventh String and the Richmond Community Sing in Richmond, Virginia, and their 2021 solo debut Rainbow Shadows embodies their rootedness in the entwined lineages of artistry and activism. Their newest project, European Ancestral Reclamation Songs, explores how learning and singing the traditional music of their ancestors can help white people confront their complicity in American empire-building; reconnect with the earth-based cultures their ancestors gave up; and decolonize their participation in liberation movements. Whether performing, writing poetry, leading songs, or speaking truth to power, Stellar’s singing reminds us that the personal is political, oppression must be unlearned, trees are good, and liberation is for everyone.

“Most of us can only do small things, so the small things are actually much more important, since they are the majority of actions we can take”

“[Stellar]’s style falls somewhere between Sinead O’Connor, Indigo Girls, and Joni Mitchell, framing candid societal commentary over enthralling instrumental arrangements.”
